Magnifiques Montagnes!

Magnificent Mountains!

The Smokies, the Rockies, the Sierras, the Cascades, the Uintas...

...and the majestic Tetons in western Wyoming!

Popular legend says they were named by French explorers who gazed upon their immense magnificence...and boldly declared them to be.... "The Grand Tetons".

The literal English translation: "The Large Nipples".

...only the French.  Mais Oui!

We spent 3 peaceful nights and 4 glorious days...

 ...canoeing...

...portaging...

...camping...

...hiking...

...and at mealtimes...

...enjoying some of the 'best seats in the house'.

It was the height of the elk breeding season.  The bull elks 'bugled' throughout the night - a misnomer - as it should be called 'screeching'.

If you didn't know what was going on...

...you might half expect Alice's Jabberwocky to swoop across the sky.

As we sat by the campfire...listening to the bugling of the elk...the full moon rose across the lake.

We enjoyed numerous wildlife sightings: hormone-crazed elk, sweet, calm deer, scolding red squirrels, and a beautiful bald eagle that flew overhead as we canoed across Leigh Lake.

Guests stopped by for breakfast...

...and we had fresh mountain snow to chill our margaritas.

Food was required to be stored in bear-proof lockers found at each campsite.

Gratefully there were no bear sightings...

...except for some bear prints I saw in the mud.

However - with further scrutinizing - I expertly deduced that Teton bears probably didn't wear Sorels.

(It really did look like a bear paw from a distance...Really!)

Then there was the thieving little mouse who - while we were distracted with roasting the perfect marshmallows - stole the Hershey's chocolate right off of our graham cracker!

Like a true chocoholic...he absconded with the goods in the blink of an eye. We imagined him somewhere in the forest lying belly-up in a chocolate-induced coma.  Touche!

Bottom line...

We didn't want to leave...

                                          ...we want to go back.

Appreciation

Today
is...

Administrative Professionals Day.

Who knew?

Perhaps a 'perfect' administrative professional would have known this.

I became aware of this event...

when the beautiful Flowers...

 ...and the awesome Cookies arrived!

And...being the wonderful co-workers that they truly are...

I got some much appreciated help eating up the cookies...

...so I wouldn't have to eat them all by myself!

What I know for certain...

...is that I have the best job...

and co-workers...EVER!

Ice Fishing! Say What?!!

Many moons ago (over 50 years of them)...
...I used to go ice fishing with my family.

Yes...this is true.

In order to survive the winter doldrums...

...fishing contests were often held on the frozen lakes of northern Minnesota.
I don't remember us winning many prizes for the biggest catch.

We usually won prizes for the youngest attendee...

...as we often arrived with a bundled up baby.

I was about 7 years old the last time I was ice fishing...

...sitting on a little stool perched over a hole in the ice, waiting not-so-patiently to get a nibble on my line.

The novelty wore off quickly.

In no time I'd be drawn away from the task at hand...

...eager to join the other kids attempting to jump on the toboggans that would whiz by - pulled by a truck or a snowmobile.

Even if you managed to land on a toboggan - it was rare that you would remain on it for very long.

It was an exhausting game...especially trying to run in full winter regalia...but oh what fun!

And it was that wonderful kind of tired...the kind that had me sound asleep in the car two minutes after leaving the lake.

Fast forward to February 2013...Strawberry Reservoir, UT...

...and an invitation to go ice fishing!

It was clear that some things had changed...

...but the basics of ice fishing haven't evolved all that much.

You are still sitting on a frozen lake...

...perched over a hole in the ice...

...waiting to get a nibble on your line.

But as it is with age and greater wisdom...

...and being surrounded by wonderful new friends...

...I was content to relax and wait for the nibbles.

My first catch...

...lake foliage.

It was a Keeper.

My next catch...

...a Rainbow Trout.

It was not a Keeper.

We already had enough for dinner...

...so I put it back
...in the hole
...in the ice.

These weren't quite so lucky...

...but they were delicious!

Good Times!

Beautiful Bryce!

There are 5 National Parks in Utah:  Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands.

There are also 45 State Parks, 12 National Forests, and 4 National Wildlife Refuges.

To say that Utahns love and appreciate the great outdoors is an understatement.

Last weekend I got to experience the amazing beauty of Bryce Canyon National Park.

I wish I had a quarter for every time I uttered the words...

"Wow!" "Amazing!" "Beautiful!"

However, I rarely uttered...
"I really have to pee".

I have acquired great bladder control since I've become a winter hiker! (TMI?)

We saw grand landscapes

 ...Hoodoos...

...and tunnels.

...and crossed paths with an occasional hiker who kindly agreed to take our picture.

There were bold and beautiful ravens...

...who looked a bit peeved when they couldn't cajole a handout.

Lunchtime with a hoodoo view...

...Aahhh...

...Life is good!
